Alyssa Lang:

I am so absolutely honored to be interviewing today's guest today for you guys. She's actually one of my best friends and it's so freaking cool. Every time I get to like interview my people. That not just are so amazing in my personal life, but also are so transformational in the business space. And I'm just so excited to be interviewing her because she's going to be talking about some incredible things. So this is my friend, Nicole staples. She's also a yoga instructor and she actually specifically helps entrepreneurs, which is really interesting because you don't really get to see a lot of people in the wellness space who specifically serve entrepreneurs. Because guys, as we all know, we are a very unique breed. And so we need that kind of support to really get us through all the weight that we carry on our shoulders. So today's episode is going to be so amazing because we're going to talk about why you should be pouring into your own cup. Um, so that way you can fill other people's cups, but you have to pour into your first. She's going to talk about some breath control techniques for when you're feeling anxious or you're feeling overwhelmed, how to really stop and realign with yourself. Because sometimes we can just go, go, go, she's going to give you some practical tips for that. She's going to talk about how to center yourself, which is really through , those breathing techniques and why entrepreneurs really need to have tailored support, which is how she supports people. And her last unique approach is actually how she recommends using things like yoga and breath work. And recentering for your team meetings or for your team retreats or ways for you and your team to get to know each other better and how she actually offers that support. So I hope you enjoy today's episode and I'm so honored to have one of my really good friends here today. And I cannot wait to see how much you guys love this episode. Hey, everyone, and welcome back to yet another episode of the Conquering Workflows and Systems for Bookkeepers and Accountants podcast with your host here, Alyssa Lang. I'm so excited because it is very rare that I get to bring on some really close friends of mine onto my own podcast. As you guys know, you guys have met Brooke Swan a million times, and y'all know that she's one of my biz besties alongside Serena Shoup, but I actually get to bring someone even more special who is literally in my same town. She was actually my very first friend I ever met here in Lake Arrowhead, which is where I live. And our relationship is just like flourished over the years of knowing each other. And she's just such a beautiful, bright light. She's actually been a lovely guest expert in my group coaching program breakthrough. She did several yoga sessions to help our students really like lean into their month and, and just start the month off feeling good and really leaning and pouring into yourself. So without further ado, I'm going to be welcoming one of my really good friends, Nicole Staples. Thank you so much for being here today. Thank you so

Nicole Staples:

much for having me. I'm so excited to share what I'm doing and how I'm helping business owners through the practice of yoga. So I have gotten into yoga in 2017 and I started doing yoga because I was extremely stressed out. I was working several jobs and I was just not getting any sleep. And I went to Costa Rica. to do a yoga teacher training, and it changed my life. So I'm here to share the practice of yoga with, business owners and entrepreneurs who are looking to de stress their lives.

Alyssa Lang:

I love that. As you know, you have seen me go through some, some very stressful moments because you actually get to see me in real life. And we have these conversations and I think if anybody really understands the power of what you do, I think the beauty of how you approach it is going to be so good for what people like the tips. I already know that you're gonna have great tips today, but like the conversation for today, because I think in the accounting space, I can say this and this is like for any entrepreneur, just like all the other ones you work with as well. is I find that we're all so go, go, go, do, do, do that. We always forget to stop and take care of us. And so I'm really excited to have this conversation and kind of lean into it. So I'm so excited. Me too. Yeah. So I kind of want to just like, start off with like, probably the most important question, which is like, I know everybody listening is probably like, Alyssa, I know this, I know I should put myself first, but I want to hear from you, someone who's an expert in this space. And let our listeners know, like, why is it so key to pour into your own cup to really better serve your own clients?

Nicole Staples:

Well, I feel like people know this on a logical level, but putting it into practice really does change your life. So it's important to pour into your own cup, so to speak, is because you can't give to other people unless you are giving to yourself and self care practices are so important because they allow you to take time to sit and Focus on what's going on in your mind. A lot of the times, we can get on mental loops, which create anxiety and then we cannot focus on other people and other people's needs if we're stuck in our own stuff. So that is why I think it's really important to take a moment and use these tools of yoga. To be able to, find relaxation, to de stress, to find some mindful movements, just to really allow yourself to focus and, and be there for yourself.

Alyssa Lang:

I love that. I'm like, you know that I'm really huge on like trying to put yourself first, but it's still hard. Like you said, it's, I understand it logically. And I didn't even think to like put it in that perspective. I understand it. Like, I know I need to do it. Do I? Probably not. Not as much as I probably should. You know what I mean? But at the same time, it's like, it's just taking things one step at a time. And it sounds like what you're saying is there's different ways that this can be, that you could come about pouring into your own cup. Yeah. But one solution, which is really your zone of genius, you were mentioning could possibly be implementing something like yoga, something like, something like some sort of movement that's really just going to help you relax. So I'd love to kind of dive in. Because I know that there are different levels of types of yoga and then I get really overwhelmed when I think about the wellness space only because it's like, you gotta do the work. I'm doing bunny ears but nobody can actually see it. I'm doing bunny ears. You have to do the work. And then you have to exercise. You have to do this. And if you take it high level for me and you just tell me, just move my body, I'm going to get so overwhelmed because I need like examples and I'm sure like other people are the same. So I'd love to hear from your perspective. If someone really isn't taking care of themselves, not putting themselves first and forgetting to prioritize themselves, what suggestions would you make as far as like what type of movement to put themselves into to really start leaning into that?

Nicole Staples:

Well, so there's there's so many tools that you can use, but it really doesn't have to be like this big, intricate practice. It can just be five minutes. It can be 10 minutes. breathing is really, really a good tool like breathing. Hanayama is what, breath control means in yoga. And if you take some time to just breathe, if you're finding yourself anxious, do you, if you, if you sit and you say, you know what, I'm finding myself like feeling anxious, I'm just going to take a moment and do this particular breathing technique. And I'll share some of those with you. then that can be yoga and that is self care. It doesn't have to be like an hour long yoga practice with all these physical postures, which can help strengthen your body and help you become more flexible. But I think the idea of yoga and these crazy Instagram, beautiful, postures misrepresents what yoga is.

Alyssa Lang:

I love that. I think you're so right because like I do know and understand that breath work is really so key. And I know that the connection between it with yoga, specifically learning that from you. So I have, I know that I haven't told you this, but I have openly shared To like my, my listeners here about my anxiety attack, the one that you like helped me work through. What was that last, last winter when we went to the winter storm? Yeah. Um, so the reason why I'm bringing that back up is because in that moment for anyone listening, like I've shared, you know, what I kind of went through and how that happened to me and like the, the stress that I felt and that everything was kind of piling up on me. It was a result of not me not taking care of myself. It was a result of me not thinking about, you know, I was thinking so much about everyone else and not thinking about myself. So anyways, what had happened was I had a really bad anxiety attack and I called Nicole and Nicole was one of my top people I called because she's so good at being patient, kind, like, allowing me to be in the moment. And I remember we did, I think it was that night like another anxiety attack kind of hit me that same night and you were just like, Hey, we're going to do this breathing, which I'm really excited to dive into those techniques because I know for myself, I've only experienced like an anxiety attack, like one or two other times since then. And I'm very grateful. That's only been that many times, but I know a lot of my students do deal with anxiety and do still deal with stress. And so I would love to hear, cause you said that you wanted to share some of the techniques about, you know, I forgot the term that you use, but it's like a yoga term for breath control. But like, how can people go about that if maybe it's not about this crazy movement, but right now really leaning into let's recenter ourselves.

Nicole Staples:

So yeah, there's tons of breathing techniques that you can use. Pranayama is the name of, the breath control in yoga. So the one that we, did when you had the anxiety attack was a four, seven, eight, and it's simple. It's easy to remember. I love to use that. And it's just inhaling for a count of four, holding your breath for a count of seven, and then exhaling for a count of eight. And why that is helpful is because when you're focused and anchored in the breath, you can't be In anxiety because you can only you're focusing on the present moment. And so that's what a lot of breathing techniques. It's to get you out of your head and into the present moment. And that is so, it's such a good tool for anybody that's struggling with anxiety. Any breathing technique is, but I really love that one because it really allows you to anchor. It allows you to focus on the counting, which takes you into the moment. So that is one of the wonderful ones that I like to use in my classes and just if anybody needs some guidance in, focusing in the present moment.

Alyssa Lang:

I love that. So one thing I'll take a step back on, which I know that you did in your introduction, you talked about you were an instructor and your words are hard. You said you were a yoga instructor for entrepreneurs. So I'd love to kind of take a step back because I think a lot of yoga instructors that I've met or people in the wellness space, they're not usually. actually niched in the entrepreneurial space. And I know we've had this conversation before, privately, like just between us two, when we were talking about your business and everything that you've got going on. And, I was telling you, like, it's so unique because I think a lot of people in our space, we kind of get neglected because we're different breed of people. Those who are entrepreneurs, because we carry the weight of the world, of our clients and also of our team. So I'd love to take a step back and just kind of ask, like, What differentiates someone where you're really just enticed to support the entrepreneur space versus just, you know, the average human, which I know that there's beauty in serving both, but just curious, like why that's been a focus for you.

Nicole Staples:

Oh, well, I love entrepreneurs. First of all, I am an entrepreneur. I understand the stress that, you have as an entrepreneur. And I also realized that people are managing not just themselves, but other people and how you are wanting to help other people, you know, succeed. And also stay on top of your own business and be successful. So it's not just your success. It's the success of your team, the people that you work with, your clients, and it goes on and on. So I really just enjoy serving people that I understand. Like I understand the stress. That you might have as an entrepreneur. I understand that as an entrepreneur, we sometimes get on the computer or we can focus for hours on just one thing without taking breaks for ourselves. I understand that we don't move when we get like involved in whatever that it is that we're doing we forget to mindfully move and I, I understand that from a business perspective and. I know that I can help people navigate, their team management by practicing, either practicing by themselves or offering it to their team. And that is why I'm inspired to work with entrepreneurs.

Alyssa Lang:

I love that. And then one thing I do want to highlight because I'm all about bringing in people to do fun stuff with your team and you kind of segued so beautifully into the next question that I had for you, which is, I know that you have done guest expert sessions for our breakthrough students in the past. I think it was like either two or three times and our students love it because it's at the very beginning of the month. where they're most likely the highest stress in the accounting space is anywhere from like the first to the 10th of the month because we do like what we call month end close. And so you've done several yoga sessions and it's cool because like some people turn their camera off and they're just doing in the background. And then there's like some people, you don't keep their camera on and they're doing yoga and it's really cool because they get to see you practice. And then I really liked it because you kind of ease people into it because sometimes I've heard of like yoga where sometimes it's really intense yoga, which like you said, it's all different depending on what you need, but it's cool because you kind of approach it as like, let's just pour into ourselves. Let's move our body. Let's be intentional. But you talked about a second ago, how you do support for not just the entrepreneur, but also the entrepreneur and the team. So what does that look like? Does that mean that you're doing like a zoom, like a virtual call? Does it have to be in person? What does that look like for you?

Nicole Staples:

I do zoom., so if you wanted to do something online, I offer online, but if you did want an in person yoga instructor, I'm willing to travel to you within a reasonable distance, of course. But yeah, if you, if you want to do like a weekly or a monthly call where you're just You're just introducing your team to collaborate or practice yoga together and create a sense of community and build teamwork. That is something that I can provide. It can improve your communication, it can improve empathy amongst your team, and it can make you overall more productive as

Alyssa Lang:

a team as well. I love that, especially when it comes to like the empathy side and also it just builds up kind of like the rapport with each other because like now there's yet another thing to talk about too, because it's like the camaraderie. I know that like as an entrepreneur myself, being in the like virtual space, there are upsides. The upsides is I get to work from wherever I want. I can go wherever I want to. And I love that. But the downfall is Man, am I lonely? Like, yeah, I've got my dog here and he's just staring at me and he's being so cute. Um, and so anyways, like it gets really lonely. Like I'm by myself all the time that like, I do miss that, like water cooler feeling where like you're in an office and you get to go like bull**** by the water cooler, like have conversations at lunch. It's not like that. And so I really liked the idea of doing that with your team where you're doing like a community zoom session with your team, maybe once a month, if it were me, I'd probably do once a month or even biweekly where it's like all team members. You know, you can't really necessarily force them, but you can ask that like, Hey, if you guys want to, we are hosting these sessions. Nicole's going to come in. She's an expert. You're welcome to join us. It just creates more opportunity for everyone to be like, Oh, I really liked that when she did that breathing thing. It just allows them to kind of connect together and have yet another conversation piece.

Nicole Staples:

Yeah, I love that because it's, you're breathing together, you're learning techniques to reduce stress. You are moving. And sometimes the movements like, you know, they can be really fun and fluid and, you know, they're helping move your body and build strength, but they're also connecting you in a way that if you're doing it together, you can. Talk about that. You can associate that with, you know, that was challenging for me or, you know, what, like that actually loosened up my hips. I needed that, you know, so it does create a conversation amongst your teammates and your employees. So I love offering that because it gives people a sense of wellbeing. And when you're creating a sense of wellbeing amongst your team, you're really, Allowing your team to grow together and as individuals.

Alyssa Lang:

I love that so much because I, I just know how it was for like our breakthrough students. They just loved it so much. Like they literally would be like just doing their own thing. And like I said, some people had their cameras off because like some people are more comfortable and it's like, that's great. But the fact that they showed up and then after the session, they'd be like, Oh my gosh, we love this. Thank you so much for being here. It's just so fun. And I really think it's just yet another great idea. And so I kind of wanted to pinpoint for anyone listening as most of you who maybe are potentially building up your team right now, these are really key ways to actually keep the rhythm of your team's cadence together. As far as not just being all about work, sometimes breaking up the productivity with different things that help people like expand as a human or move their body or things like what Nicole's suggesting. it actually allows for more productivity. So a lot of people think that. Oh, well, if I distract him with these types of sessions and these types of collaborative experiences, it's actually going to reduce our efficiency. And that's actually not true. I will tell you guys from experience that the more times that we implemented things like we would do like, monthly, I'm sorry, quarterly, we would do like game night with our team. And so every single quarter, we would do like two hours. It was not required. Like they did not have to come or not. And it was. Honestly, they just got to come and show up. We would play like virtual UNO. I would order everyone dinner. And like, even though that sounds unproductive, it actually is so productive. So I would love to hear from your perspective, like the idea, not just for like the team, but for the entrepreneur itself, why this actually putting this time aside for themselves is more productive than just continuing to do that other. You know, client work or keep working through that hour?

Nicole Staples:

Well, because number one, when you offer something like yoga or even just game night or something that is not work related, it shows that you care as an employer. And it also, when you're taking care of yourself, it shows that you care about yourself enough. to show up for yourself to be there for your employees., I really do believe that you know, we can't just be productive all the time, you know, there's more to life than that. So when you show that there is more to life than just productivity, then you are creating a, an elevated life for yourself. for your clients and your employees and your team. So I believe that creating that holistic lifestyle

Alyssa Lang:

is, , helpful for everybody. I love that so much. I have a really random question only because I know we've chatted about this, but I don't know if you've kind of touched on this before, but, we always encourage our students, especially inside of Breakthrough, we really encourage them to host a team retreat. And so that team retreat, like we're saying like outside of the virtual space, we've had a lot of our students do that. We've had like our Canadian students like met up in certain parts of Canada. I've even done it for my own team where we did like in person meetups. So we've done like San Jose and we've done Nashville. Stuff like that. But would you also encourage that? Like if a company were to put on their own company retreat, like any of our listeners here, and they want to bring in maybe two or three or their team members, is that something that you're also willing to consider to fly out to them? Obviously at a reasonable fee for them to like pay you to fly and travel. Is that also something that you offer as far as like travel to support them at their own team retreats?

Nicole Staples:

Yeah, absolutely. I would love like. Meeting on zoom and in the online space is great, but it is so wonderful to connect in person. I feel like people are missing that, especially if they are more online focused is like it just, I would like like just a physical hug to or a handshake meeting those people in person and practicing something that is so good for you. is something that I, definitely offer. And I also recommend for people to do.

Alyssa Lang:

Oh, I love that so much. I think it's going to be great. I know that I have you in mind when I do my next retreat in person one for breakthrough, because we haven't done one in quite some time. But now that I've hired this new personal assistant, thank God for her. She's finally going to help me put together retreats again. So For anyone listening, I know that you guys have been waiting for me to share that with you guys that I'm going to be hosting yet another retreat. I will put the wait list for you guys linked below and maybe you'll potentially be seeing Nicole there and see if she'd be willing to fly out with us and be there for you guys to do sessions every morning because I feel like I've been also leaning in as an entrepreneur and like a coach in the space. I've also realized that I need to start exposing my own audience to really like the self care because if we don't take care of ourselves, we literally cannot take care of our clients. Yeah. It's like too much. Like I think that at the end of the day, like there's like this, I don't know if what the right word is, but there's this like, saying or whatever people like assume is like hustle, hustle, hustle, like you have to just hustle in order to have success. And I really don't believe in that. Like, and I used to believe in that because that's what everybody told me was that, you know, In order to have success, in order to have money, you had to like literally kill yourself working, but the longer I've been in business, the more I realized that I can still take care of myself and still make money and not have to work as much. And I think that this whole conversation just allows everyone to kind of lean into What would it look like if every day I just moved myself just a little bit more, or if I involved my team in this, and what would that actually look like for the company? How would you be able to pour into other people's cup? Because you focused on yourself, because you realigned and you re centered with yourself. And I think this conversation, Nicole, is so great because we in this industry especially are so bad at like taking care of ourselves. Like it's totally normal for us.

Nicole Staples:

I, you know, it's, it's funny because that is really the reason I got into yoga because I was pushing myself so hard to be productive because I felt that hard work and there's nothing wrong with hard work, but where, where your energy is focused, like I was just working double shifts. I was sleeping two hours and going to my next job and I was extremely stressed out and I don't want that for anybody because that's not, that's not going to get you where you want to go. And if you sit in a five minute meditation practice, even if it's breath work or just mindfully being aware of your thoughts, you will see that that doesn't actually serve you. And, You can come up with better ways. There's better alternative ways. You can work smarter. I know people say this work smarter, not harder, but sometimes you need that mindful meditation

Alyssa Lang:

to realize that. Yeah. I love that. I think it's so funny because, , when I started this podcast, my lovely podcast producer, Ian, so shout out to Ian, cause I know you're going to be listening to this and this is totally because of you. He would always tell me like, I really suggest that you do some like breath work,, before you like record your episodes. And he was like, it's because like I taught, you know, Nicole, you know, me in real life. Like I talk so fast, my brain is going like a million miles per hour all the time. And he actually suggested to me like, like re center with yourself before you get on a podcast interview. So that way you can be like way more calm and you can kind of flow easily into it versus like I was really struggled with like, falling over my own words, especially at the very beginning of, recording this podcast. And it's just really funny that like that kind of stuff, just the mindfulness of it just really goes such a long way.

Nicole Staples:

It really does. And it's not It doesn't have to be like, again, complicated. If you wanted to do some breathing techniques before you start your podcast, you can do a deep belly breathing, which is just inhaling deeply through your nose into your belly and letting your belly expand. Holding that for just a moment and then exhaling releasing all the air out through your mouth and you can do that three times before you start your podcast and that will just release tension and it will connect you to the present moment and it will just stimulate the relaxation response in your body that will change

Alyssa Lang:

the way that you show up. I love that. Especially like other people who are listening, who maybe are going to get on like a really stressful, you know, call with clients that maybe they sit on the board with them as the financial team. Like if you guys are finding yourself getting into that moment of like, I'm really stressed out. I'm really overwhelmed. It's really such a great way to reconnect. I remember when I was speaking at VKX in Vegas, I was so nervous because it was the first time I was publicly speaking. I was so overwhelmed. And my friend Serena was like, let's take some deep, breaths and tried to reconnect me. And I think it was just, this just is really the conversation here is just like, how can you implement more ways to be mindful, like mindfulness in your life, whether that's through some sort of yoga practice, through some sort of breathing technique, any sort of way that's going to pour into yourself. And that can mean little things like for me, it's my bath, which I don't have on right now, but it's getting built in and I'm very excited about it. But like that for me is my mindfulness. That's also like how I treat myself. And so I'd love to kind of end off to hear like, What are your tips for someone to really lean into maybe they're so conditioned and so used to pouring into their kids and their husband and their clients and their team? What are like maybe three tips of what you can give to someone about how they can start being a little bit more mindful with whether it's their movement, their mind, their breath or whatever that looks like?

Nicole Staples:

Well, that, I mean, there are, there are so many tips, but I would say start with something simple. Start with breathing. Just take a moment. You know, you can set a timer. It could be like a short timer for two minutes and allow yourself to focus on how you're breathing. Just like become aware of how your breath is entering your body. It's so simple, but like taking the time to do it is another thing. So if you set a timer and you're like just Connect to the breath. How is the breath entering? Is it entering into your chest? Is it entering into your belly? How is the breath exiting the body? Is it coming into your chest or your belly? And is it smooth? Is it even, is it short and or is it shallow? And it's just becoming aware without judgment. You know, sometimes we, we were like, Oh no, my breath is short. It's shallow. That means something bad is happening and it's just becoming aware. And then once you become aware of that, can you then extend the length of your breath. Can you, you know, breathe into your belly? Can you breathe out through your belly? So it's just finding those little, little things and just being aware of it and seeing if you can mindfully change it. And so that's a simple practice that I recommend for people just starting out to say, what is all of this? How do I do it? that's one tool. Another thing that you can do is, you know, set an intention, intention setting can be so powerful. It's like, what do I want to do for this day? And that's it. It could just be for the day. What do I want to accomplish? Or what do I want to focus on finding maybe more joy? Maybe you're like, I want to focus on joy and that can be just your intention. And that's it. Simple. So, you know, if you find yourself getting off of that, I'm not connected with joy. just let yourself come back to it, you know, or maybe just set an alarm every once in a while throughout the day to just remind you of your intention of joy or whatever it is that your intention is so that you can continue to come back to that mindfulness.

Alyssa Lang:

I was like literally writing them down. I like the idea of setting the um, alarm because I love my alarms and like setting them throughout the day that's just like, hey, just like remind you because I like you said, I think at the very beginning you were talking about how we can all just like be hunched over our computer and just be so in the moment, just getting **** done. That we like forget that like four hours have gone by. I know me and you like, you know, we've done so many coworking sessions before me and you just get into it. And then we look up and it's like, Oh my God, it's literally lunchtime. Like, I can't believe it. And it's like, I'm going to continue to work. Yeah. Cause I want to get this done because I'm almost at the end of my project. And I know me and you, we both become very obsessive with our projects. We want to do all the research and we want to know all the answers. And like, we could get stuck forever, which is, you know, Obviously a lot of people who are listening as well, but I love the idea of the simple timer or alarm that would go off a part way through your day to be like, did you feed yourself? Because I, for real, I'm like the notorious for not eating throughout the day because I'm like, go, go, go. And because I don't check in with myself. And that's actually a pretty genius idea for me to just set an alarm and be like, did you feed yourself? And you know what I mean?

Nicole Staples:

No, I, I, yeah, exactly. And you know, you know me and I, I struggle with water. So it's like setting an alarm to drink water. Like those are things that are important. and easy to forget if you just are focused on what you're doing in the moment.

Alyssa Lang:

Yeah. 100%. It's so funny because I don't know who it was, but I, Oh, I think it was, , Oh my God, what is his name? I'm going to forget it. Anyways. I remember one time there was a coach that I worked with and he would always tell me, That anytime you ever even think about water means that you're thirsty. That means that your body is triggering you. So like if you just like think of your water bottle or you think, Oh, I should probably drink water, but you're so knee deep into something. Is your body indicating to you, I need water. And so like anytime I find myself even thinking about water, whether it's like me wanting to drink it or not, I immediately like have to find, you know, me, I love my water bottle. And I take it freaking everywhere. That thing is massive. but that was such a cool little mindfulness tip. And like you said, they're not massive things that have changed my life. They're little tiny things that have just added up. So like things like setting the alarm saying that today I'm going to do 30 minutes of yoga, 10 minutes, like you said, it doesn't have to be complicated, nor does it have to be long. It's really just creating the commitment to show up for yourself and stop putting everyone else first.

Nicole Staples:

Absolutely. Yes. like I said, yeah, five minutes is fine. Just as long as you're taking that time for yourself and that'll build over time because I feel like Once you start taking care of yourself and you're creating the habit, you're going to want to do it more.

Alyssa Lang:

I love that. So I kind of think this is a really great opportunity and great time to kind of segue into how can people get into your world. But before we kind of get into that, I wanted to ask because I know the answer to this, but our people do not. Do you have any available resources other than working with you directly? Like if they want to hire you to have more of a tailored experience, do you have any like available resources online, that people can kind of pop into and kind of utilize in that the meantime of working with you directly? like as far as resources, you mean like my website? Yeah. Website, YouTube. Are you still doing your YouTube? Yeah.
